Tsunoshima Lighthouse

A beautiful lighthouse with a view of the blue sea

This stone lighthouse stands at Yumegasaki, the northwestern tip of Kakunoshima, a mountain in the Sea of Japan.
The light tower is made entirely of granite, and is one of only two lighthouses in Japan that is not painted.

The last lighthouse designed by the British engineer Richard Henry Brunton, known as the “father of lighthouses,” and the first Western-style lighthouse on the Sea of Japan, it was first lit with an oil lamp in 1876.

The lens is an oversized Fresnel lens, one of only five in Japan, and is designated as a first-class lighthouse.

It is considered the most beautiful stone lighthouse in Japan.

It is a Grade A preserved lighthouse with high historical and cultural value, and is designated as a National Important Cultural Property.
It has been selected as one of the 50 best lighthouses in Japan, a Heritage of Modernization, and a Civil Engineering Heritage Site recommended by the Japan Society of Civil Engineers.

The lighthouse is open to the public, and visitors can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view from the 105 spiral steps inside the lighthouse.
The former lighthouse keeper’s quarters, the “retreat house,” has been reconstructed and turned into a museum.
